90.5 cm catch tops Essa Salmon Derby

ANGUS - The Essa Salmon Festival and Riverbank Derby wrapped up Sunday. A 90.5 cm salmon caught by local resident Mark Cox was the biggest fish this season, earning him $3,000 in prize money donated by Devonleigh Homes and Sargeant’s Company Ltd.

Second prize went to Bela Kovacs for a 86 cm fish to win $1,000 donated by Zancor Homes and Brookvalley Development, while third prize was won by Eduard Gurevich and Samuel Gurevich. They won $400 in gift certificates from Wolf’s Den, donated by Spriggs Insurance and Wolf’s Den.

Eduard Gurevich was also the winner of the winner of the Poker Challenge, earning two free Essa passes for the 2012 derby donated by the Essa Economic Development Committee (EDC).

Raffle winners were as follows:

First prize: Sharon Denney, 10-minute shopping spree to No Frills, donated by No Frills Angus and the EDC.

Second Prize: Conrad McNeil, $500 cash, donated by Munro Products Ltd. and Angus/Borden Music Store.

Third Prize: Ed Prosak, $250 cash donated by Scotiabank (Angus).

Fourth Prize: Gord MacKenzie, restaurant package, donated by CW Coop’s, Dj’s Pizza & Café, Mr. Sub, Panda Express, McDonald’s (Angus), Ravi’s Pizza & Donairs.

The $251 prize winner from the 50/50 draw was Chris Miller.

In the youth category, Owen Smith won a silver coin, donated by Angus Coin. Brandon Durham won a fishing rod, donated by Mike McCowan. Tackle boxes were won by Josip Pusic, Jacob Davidson and Lucas Smith, all courtesy of Bill (Elvis) Gallant.
